Chenin
Blanc
Loire Valley, France · SA since 1655Also known as: Steen (SA) · Pineau de la Loire (France)The world's most versatile grape — and South Africa's cornerstone. Bone dry to honeyed sweet, still to sparkling, unoaked to barrel-aged. No other white grape does more.
01 In the Vineyard
Round, Dark Green & Three to Five-Lobed
Chenin Blanc leaves are medium sized, round, and dark green with three to five lobes. Early budding makes the vines vulnerable to spring frost — a key management challenge in SA's variable spring climate.
Medium, Oval, Yellow-Green with Thick Skins
Medium-sized, oval, yellow-green berries with notably thick skins — the source of Chenin's phenolic bite and its natural susceptibility to botrytis. The juicy flesh carries the grape's hallmark high acidity.
★ The Style Spectrum
No other white grape produces such a broad range of styles — from bone-dry mineral to honeyed botrytis dessert. This is Chenin's superpower.
SA produces 53% of all Chenin Blanc globally. It is SA's most planted grape at 18.6% of all vine plantings. "Steendruiven" was likely among the first grapes pressed in 1659. The Old Vine Project celebrates Chenin vines 35+ years old — over 6,000 hectares are 20+ years old.
03 Tasting Profile
Chenin's calling card is its assertive acidity — woven through the wine like a spine. It is more cerebral than hedonistic. SA Chenin displays apple, quince, melon, apricot, guava and pineapple with a floral honeysuckle quality. Oak and lees add honey, nuts, toffee and toast. Top SA examples need 8–10 years to show their best.

04Food Pairing — SA Cuisine
Chenin Blanc's remarkable versatility means it pairs with almost anything. The high acidity matches the freshness of West Coast seafood, cuts through Cape Malay spices and cream-based dishes, and the sweeter styles complement the fruit-forward heat of a good curry. Off-dry styles are SA's ultimate braai white.
05 Winemaking
Chenin Blanc is the grape where winemaking decisions matter most. The same grape, same vineyard — dramatically different results depending on vessel, oak, lees, and timing.
SA winemakers increasingly use concrete eggs and amphora for Chenin fermentation and ageing. These vessels allow micro-oxygenation without oak flavour — producing wines with texture and complexity that are neither obviously oaked nor reductively mineral.
